LEANING TOWER OF PISA.

Experiments are now being carried out with a view to preventing the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa from going any farther off the straight. In Britain there is nothing quite like the Leaning To.ver, but there are some English churches which can boast of curiously crooked or twisted spires. One of theso is to be seen at Chesterfield, and another at Ermington, on tho borders of Dartmoor. Both present a delightfully fantastic appearance, and deserve to be as famous as I'isa's tower. Even where a spire seems perfectly straight it may have a slight slant. The spire of Salisbury Cathedral, for instance, is said to be 2ft. off the perpendicular. There is nothing to worry about in any of these cases, but when a spire takes a sudden list to one side, one may look out for trouble. This happened to the spire of Chichester Cathedral in 1861, just before it crashed into tho church.. ■
