WHARE TONGARIRO.
Sir, —Having been • for many years, an ardent advocate of Maori nomenclature, and especially the correct'.pronunciation thereof, I have read with mnch interest some of the correspondence in this nection. I agree that the word "whafe" is applicable and that Whare Rumariga or Whare Manuhiri, would be highly suitable. The one serious objection to these, however, is the apparent inability of the very great majority of English-speaking persons to pronounce "whare" correctly; it usually becomes "warry." The Maori sound written "wh" has no precise equivalent ; in our tongue, but- partakes- 4jtrth' of our "wh" and ."f," and is not, actually either. "Tongariro" also is seldom heard pronounced as it should. be. The first syllable is "to" —pronounced "toe" and not. "tong." - •
