PROFESSOR STEWART'S MOVE.
DOMINION RECORD RECALLED.
DISTINGUISHED WAR SERVICE.

Professor Hugh Stewart, formerly professor of classics at Canterbury Collogo, and, since 1926, professor of Latin at the University of Leeds, has been ap-' pointed principal of University College, Nottingham.
Professor Stewart was elected to the chair of classics at Canterbury College in 1912. He was born in Scotland in 1884 and educated at Fettes College, Edinburgh University and Tiinity College, Cambridge, of which he was a foundation scholar. After a : short period, 1908 to 1909, of teaching at he became assistant lecturer and lectured in the University of Liverpool. At this period hq published a considerable number of his writings on classical and other subjects.
At the outbreak of the Great War Professor Stewart left Canterbury College and, until December, 1919, served with great distinction in the army. Ho saw service on Gallipoli and in France and Flanders. From March, 1916, to November, 1918, lie commanded the second battalion of the Canterbury Regiment. He was t.wice wounded and won the following honours:—C.M.G., D.S.O. (with bar), M.C., Croix de Guerre (with palm), and was four times mentioned in despatches.
At tho end of the war ho was for a short time director of education in the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, and on his return becomo honorary A.D.C. to the Governor-General of New Zealand. He was for two years Dominion president, as woll as president of the Christchurch' branch, of the Returned Soldiers' Association. He left Canterbury College in 1926 to occupy the chair of Latin at the University of Leeds, whence he now moves to his now appointment at Nottingham.
