FROZEN ASSETS DIFFICULTY.

(Received November 28, 7.35 p.m.) NEW YORK, Nov. 27

The Oklahoma State Banking Department has closed 12 banks'near Oklahoma City as a sequel to the unexpected death of Mr. A, McCauley, the principal owner. The difficulty of liquidating frozen assets constitutes the chief reason for the closing of the banks. The October banking report showed that the deposits of the 12 banks concerned, which are • small institutions, totalled £504,000. Their combined capital stock totals £62,000. '

The parlous condition of the timber industry in southern Kiverina in consequence of the operation of the' New South Wales Workers' Compensation Act and the child endowment scheme was emphasised last week by Mr. H. B. Douglas, who said that three mills in the Mathoura-Barham district, near the border and about 25 miles from Echuca, had already been closed and two others would probably be closed shortly. v

Mr. Douglas said that in 1925-26 the. five mills employed 161 men. In 1928-29 there were 118 men employed. By October 1 last the number had been reduced to 63 and in a recent week there were only 26 men employed. The mills had paid £5117 in respect of workers', compensation and child endowment. If the mills had been situated in Victoria the payments would, have amounted to only £l3ll. -Income tax in New South Wales was from 50 to 70 per cent. . higher than in ' Victoria. He added that about 98 per cent, of the timber from southern - Biveyina was marketed in Victoria. The: competition of the Victorian miils had resulted in undercutting.' In 1926-27 .timber was 27s per 100 super feet, but.early in 1928 the price was reduced to 20s IO^t?.
