OBITUARY.

MAHARAJA OF NEPAL\DELHI, Nov. 26. The death has occurred at Khatmandu of the Maharaja of Nepal, General Sir Chandra Jang, Prime Minister, aged 66.

Nepal is a narrow tract of country extending for about 530 miles along the southern slopes of the Himilayas. It lias a population of about 5.580,000 people. It is an independent kingdom, the present sovereign being the Maharaja Dhiraja Tribuhana. The Ran,a family, to which tho late Prime Minister belonged, has the perpetual right io the office of Prime Minister. He was born in 1863, and was educated at . Calcutta University. He ontered the army and held various commands. He is an honorary general in the British Army. He became Prime Minister in 1901. Ho visited England in 1908. and during the war rendered magnificent help to Britain in men. money and run'erials, including a gift of 31 machineguns to King Georgo on his liirthdav in 1915. He also gavo substantial help in the Waziristan campaign. 1917-18. In December. 1923. ho signed a new Treaty of Friendship between Nepal and Britain. He abolished slavery in Nepal, and emancipated about 60.000 slaves in the kingdom. Ho received many decorations and orders from King George. SIR JOHN COCKBURN. LONDON, Nov. 26. The death has occurred of Sir John Coekburn, a former Premier and AgentGeneral for South Australia, aped 79. He settled in South Australia in 1875. Sir John was elected a member- of the House of Assembly for Burra in 1884, and for Mount Barker in 1887. He was Minister of Education, 1885-87. Premier 1889-90, and Agent-General 1898-1901..
