NOTES ON THE RACING.

bad day for favourites.

several exciting finishes

tISST TELEGrtAI>H. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] TE KUITI, Monday. Twenty started in the Trial Handicap

- "ad fancies took a wide range, I'arfait Amour, Nassau Lady, Coll and Te Wuitaia jf being tho best backed. A good start saw f'e Waitni and Valreina quickly in tho 3ead from Coll and Biddy Comet. So they = into' tho straight with Parfait Amour and Nassau Lady also well up. i. Once in line for tho post To Waitai drew '' out slightly and won comfortably by half «■ length from Parfait Amour, who beat ■■• Biddy Comet by a head. Nassau Lady was

f iourth, followed by Tuku, Perennis and Coll. The winner was fractious before w leaving the birdcage where she threw H. - Gray threo times. However, sho behaved

well B t tj lc barrier and was one of the first away.' Parfait Amour finished on well ' j'. a ft*r being unlucky early. Fair wagering on tho Piopio Hack

Hurdles saw Master Roley an .£BO belter j favourite than Tho Lamb, who had a sliebt call over Archeen. Archeen. soon established a good lead and won by two ' ,lengths from Master Roley, with The Lamb •«.; * length and a-half buck third. Mashoor ii fraa a moderate fourth, followed by p Otranto and Luccss. Archeen jumped

cleanly and showed too much apced for the opposition. Master Roley and Tho Lamb ran good races, The Lamb cowing from a long way hack. Twelvo started in the Hnngatiki Hack Handicap and Te Taone. Joy Girl and Haviland had most support. Te Taone and Patoro were the leaders into tho straight with Joy Girl, Valstreet, Cruachan and Big Bertha in a bunch. Onco round the bend Pat ere shook off To Taono and camo on to score by a length from Big Bertha, who defeated Valstreet by half a length. Snow Prince was fourth, with Cruachan and Joy Girl next to finish. Patere won nicely and should win again in the country circuit. Te Taone stopped quickly in tho straight, but will be an improved horse for his racing at tho meeting. Solid wagering on the Wuiiomo Handicap saw Tho Swell about twice as well backed as Ti Tree, who was n shade better fancied than Black Maire. Black Maire and Ti Tree were tho leaders into the straight from ti bunched field. At the false mil Tho Swell, who had been racing in the roi r, dashed up on tho inside and then u fine struggle commenced. Ohinemuri and The Lover drew out slightly inside the distance and the judgo was unable to separate them at the post where Hipo was half a length away third. Ti Tree was close up fourth and Black Maire was fifth. It was a good raco and tho dead heaters both finished well. Ilipo was a triflo unlucky and was running on at the end.

An outsider in Pompeius effected a surprise in the Maniapoto Hack Handicap for which Glena Bay, Motero and Luminary were the best backed. Red Day and Luminary began smartly and retained tho lead into tho straight from Tuku, Spring Abbey and TTnoco, with Glcna Bay and Pompeius coming fast.. In a great race to the post Pompeius camo fast on the outside and won by r. neck from Spring Abbey who defeated Glena Bay by a head. Ilakanoa was fourth with Unoco and Thurnus next. Pompeius and Spring Abbey were at long prices. Glena Bay and Thurnus were unlucky in tho running, while Motere was in a hopeless position oarly and was beaten after running up handy on the outside at the turn.

Only five started in (ho Mairoa Handicap. and Tnkulama was a good favourite with Macroom the outsider of tho field at a nice price. Billikins began smartly and led into the straight closely followed by The Begum, Mncroom and Prince Lu. with Takutama coming up on the rails. Once round the bend Mncroom came on to beat Billikins by a length and a-half, Takutama being a length away third. Tho Begum was fourth, and Prince Lu last. Macroom finished in her best style and Takutama raced as if he was feeling the effects of his recent racing.

Valroe was an odds on favourito for the Rangitoto Handicap, with Terrapeen and Crown Arch also fairly well backed. Ruby Dawn and Crown Arch wero the early leaders, but at the home turn Crown Arch dropped back several lengths and Valroe joined Ruby Dawn in the lead. Valroe drew out in the run home to win by two lengths from Grand Arch, who defeated Crown Arch by a length. Always was fourth, followed by -Ruby Dawn arid William of Orange. The winner is a useful hack hut might not stand much racing on hard ground. Crown Arch was coming on again at the finish after losing some ground at the turn. Tho Farewell Handicap was a good betting'race, with Ridgemount, Awamutu and Leitrim the best backed. Awamutu gave considerable trouble at tho barrier and there was some delay. Eventually Ridgemount, from No 1. received the best of it and was the early leader. With a furlong and a-half covered Town Bird took charge and showed the way into tho straight. However, Ridgeniount regained the lead at tho foot of the straight and lasted long enough to win by half a ueck from Leitrim, who defeated Billikins by a length and a-half. Town Bird was fourth, followed by Joy Germ and Haviland. Leitrim was unlucky to lose as he covered a lot of ground round the homo turn. Lady's Boy fell. An inquiry was held into the incident, but it was found to be accidental.
