EXHIBITION OF PICTURES.

A CANTERBURY COLLECTION.

An exhibition, which should be of interest to lovers of art was opened in the Kitchener Street Hall yesterday by Mr* M. McCormick, a well-known collector, and an honorary member of the Canterbury Society of Arts. The exhibition, which will be open until Friday evening, consists of a number of oil paintings, water colours, and etchings. Two prominent oil paintings in the coU lection are the work of P. Vander Velden, who lived for some years in New Zealand, and whose work is known to connoisseurs in this country. The first of these is "The Weavers, a characteristically simple interior, with remarkable shade effects. The other picture is "The Convalescent," and is similar in treatment. "In Dutch Pastures" is the title^r

of a bright little rural scene from the brush of Bernard De Haas. Two pictures which were exhibited in the Royal Institute are "A Drinking Pool, North Wales," painted bv Fred J. Knowles, R. 1., and "A French Fishing Port," a delightfully, soft-toned little sketch by H. Caffieri. "Springtime on the Thames" is from the brush of the late Yeend King, R. 1., a well-known English painter of springtime scenery. Other pictures in. the collection are "The Moonlit Manor,"* by Sir Alfred East, R.A. r "Interior of an Irish Cabin,' by David Law, R. 1.; and several scenes around Wellington by Marcus King. The etchings present an interesting variety. One of the best is "Wharfside Thames, ■ by Frank Brangwyn, R.A., and there ara also two very fins mezzotints after Gatnsi borough.
