TAUMARUNUI. Saturday

A fatality occurred in the vicinity of Ohura last evening. Mr. D. P. Deere, of the Public Works Department, was travelling to Tokerimo by motor-car and was accompanied by six other men. The car was tracking badly and they decided to turn back. When near what is known as Carlyon camp the car suddenly swerved and went over a bank and stopped upside down in a creek after a drop of 60ft.

One of the occupants of the car, Mr. Hugh Carlyle Black, wa3 pinned underneath, and with difficulty he was extricated. Mr. Black was dead.

Mr. W. Langley suffered injuries to the head and Mr. James Secrup minor injuries. The other occupants of the car, Messrs. Deere, T. E. Thompson and W. Bogey were unhurt.

Mr. Black was a married man, 40 years of age. He was employed as a clerk on the Public Works Department at Ohura. His wife resides in Remuera Road, Auckland.

OAR SKIDS INTO BRIDGE.

WHANG-AREI. Sunday.

The loose me.tal on the Waipu Road was responsible for another motor accident last ovening, when a large car skidded as it was approaching Brook's Bridge, threa miles on the Whangarei side of Waipu. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which crashed heavily into the right handrail of the bridge. The rear portion then slewed round and struck the other rail, so that the car came to rest broadside on to the bridge, blocking traffic for some time. Although the bridge withstood the shock, the car was severely damaged, the chassis being twisted, the body strained, and the bumpers and windscreen broken. The driver sustained a dqep cut on the head, while a companion escaped injury.

SKID ON LOOSE SHINGLE.

THE LOSS OF TWO FINGERS,

A motor-car overturned as a result of a skid on loose shingle on the road to Okain's Bay, Banks Peninsula, yesterday. Desmond John Pidgeon, son of the owner of the car, Mr. W. L. Pidgeon, received serious injury including a deep cut on the head. Two fingers were cut off and he mav also lose his thumb.

Only bruises and shock were suffered by two other passengers. Mr. Pidgeon had his hands cut in breaking the windows to extricate his family.

Mrs. Pidgeon suffered badly from shock. One of her stockings was burnt off by acid from the battery.

COLLISION WITH A TEEE.

OPOTIKI, Saturday,

Two Auckland travellers, Messrs. Rogison and Tarleton, met with a motor accident to-day after leaving Opotiki fo* Whakatane. When going along the main road past the Beach tho car suddenly skidded and swerved into a tree then going over a bank with a drop of 15ft. Tho car landed on the hood which no doubt saved the occupants from serious injuries.

Mr. Tarleton had his shoulder fractured and had to receiv* attention at the Opotiki Hospital, afterwards returning to Opotiki.

The car was damaged. A power board lorry with crane lifted it back to the road.
