NEW WHARF OPENED.
TOLAGA BAY ENTERPRISE. TOTAL COST OF WORK £90,000. [BT TFXEGBAFH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.'] GISBOBNE. Friday. Tolaga Bay, 35 miles north of Gisborne, was en fete to-day on the occasion of the opening of the wharf by the Minister of Marine, Hon. J. G. Cobbe. The township is an important port of call in the coastal trada, especially between Gisborne and Auckland,' but for years all cargo had to be lightered. In 1923 a proposal was carried by the ratepayers to construct a wharf and a contract was lot to Mr. F. Goodman in September, 1924, work being commenced in the following January anrf completed recently. The wharf is 2200 ft. long and the depth of water varies from 17ft. to 17ft. 6in. There is a rise and fall of sft. 6in. Uhe wharf is situatod in the south-western corner of Tolaga Bay, close 'up to the cliffs, being snugly sheltered from all southerlies. The new wharf and cargohandling facilities represent a total outlay of approximately £90,000, which is the amount of loan money raised by the board to cover the work.
At the opening to-day addresses were delivered by Mr. E. B. Boland, chairman of the Tolaga Bay Harbour Board, Mr. K. S. Williams, M.P., Sir Apirana Ngata, and the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, all of whom stressed the'importance of the new wharf as an aid to the development of tho district.
