, A long-distance motoring record of 2,078,000 kilometers since 1897 is the unique accomplishment of Charles Faroux, former French billiard champion and chess player. ,

Motorists as a class are becoming more sober. Last year there were 1254 convictions in England (of which' only eight were women), for being drunk while in charge of a motor-car. In 1927, tho total was 1453 (ot whom fivo were women).

It is reported from Lisbon that the Portuguese Government has decided to organise a competition of producor gas plants, both for use in factories and on commercial motor vehicles. The object of the trial is to endeavour to render tho country less dependant on imported motor fuel by utilising tho timber resources of the country.

Over 65 per cent, of all cars registered in Great Britain, are less than 14 horsepower, according to an analysis made by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders of London, for the year 1928. Of all the cars in use, 26 per cent, have 12 h.p. engines, tho next largest class being tho 14 h.p. cars, which constitute 12.6 per cent, of tho total number. Nearly two per cent, of all cars aro 7 h.p. or less.

Tho highway of 170 miles over the Andes Mountains, in _ Venezuela, from Laguayra to Caracas, is said to be tho most perfect pieeo of road work in the world. Venezuela is a country of heavy rains, and precautions havo been taken to avoid slides by putting iron and cement reinforcements wherever there might be the slightest chance of a " cave-in." _ In addition, guards are stationed at intervals over the entire course of the road. v
