RHYTHM AND RHYME.
God made tho world with rhythm and rhyme— The sun's refrain, Ho made the moon; He swung tho stars to beat in time, And sot tho univorso in tune. Ho gave tho seas their mighty tonguo, Ho gave His winds their lyric wings, And thus tho very soul of song Was woven in tho scheme of things. To-day this wonder was revealed Upon a twilight-coloured plain; I saw it in tho town and field, I heard it in tho singing rain. Tho boughs and birds repeated it, Tho streams intoned it as they ran, And then I saw how closely knit Wero God and poetry with man.
A rift of sky, a group of trees, A ripple and a swallow's dart, The cadenco of a dying breeze, Liko sudden inusic, swept my heart; A laughing child looked up and sprang To greet me at the homeward climb— And nil about mo surged and sang The world God made with rhythm arid rhyme. I—Louis Uutermeyojf.
