PROPOSED TO A PEER
A ROAST PIG AS PRESENT. An amusing story was told by Lord Askwith, of St. Ives, when he illustrated the hard lot of a secretary at the annual dinner of the Birmingham Incorporated Secretaries' Association. He said:— " 1 am probably the only secretary in this room who lias had the honour of being asked in marriage by a Samoan woman. (Laughter.) " She was a widow, and I took Mr. Weller's advice. She enforced her argument by saying I was ill of fever, and ttiat. she would nurse mo well. She sent mo a bunch of bananas, and half a roast pig. I did not see her, although she massaged me. I sent her, in return, a stick of tobacco, which, I was told, completely satisfied her."
