SHINGLE REMOVED.
CAMPBELL'S BAY BEAGH.
CONTRACTOR FINED £5. A charge of removing shingle from Campbell's Bay without authority was admitted by a contractor, Lionel Malcolm, who appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Mr. Hubble, for the Marine Department, said defendant had taken about 50 yards of shingle from the beach, and the case was a bad one. Campbell's Bay was not directly under the control of the department, and the offence was detected more or less by chance. It was always difficult to trace offenders, for although nearby residents might see a man removing shingle from a neach he was usually one of their neighbours. The inspector who came across a large hole below high water mark traced cart-wheels to a roadway seven chains long and 9ft. wide, covered,> with shingle. Defendant said he had seen others take shingle from beaches and ho understood permits were granted for the purpose. He denied taking as much as 50 yards. Mr. Hubble said a permit would not be granted in respect of Campbell's Bay in any case. There was a danger of beaches being badly depleted by removal of large quantities of shingle and sand. A fine of £5 was imposed, with costs £4.
