DRAINAGE OF SWAMPS.

PROPOSED AMALGAMATION. BILL BEFORE PARLIAMENT. [IIV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Thursday. A meeting of representatives of drainage boards operating in the Woodlands swamp areas was held yesterday. They approved the bill now before Parliament for unifying the control of drainage works in tlieso areas. The bill, which authorises the formal ion of a "Taupiri Drainage and River Board," provides that any land owner in the district may lodgo an objection against the proposed amalgamated control, on the ground that the land in which he is interested does not drain into the Mangawara River, or its tributaries. Objection may also be made on the ground that ilie land has no community of interest with other areas forming part of the' Taupiri Swamp. Under the provisions of the bill the Government retains the right lo subdivide the district, or to appoint a commission to decide whether a subdivision shall take placo or not. There would not be more than 12 divisions. Tho amalgamated board would consist of not less than five and not more than 12 members.

As soon as practicable after its election the new amalgamated Taupiri Board must prepare a scheme of necessary drainage works. Before a poll is taken for the principal loan tho lands would bo classified according to the degree of benefit to be derived by them from the proposed works,. A motion was carried by the meeting requesting tho House to put the bill through all stages this session.
