THE NIGHTINGALES.
gjr,—We have several times lately seen two birds in our garden apparently resembling the English nightingales. They were brown birds with long tails that trailed on the ground after them like trains. They have not yet given us any music, ,aa they are- usually very busy selecting dinner. One day I saw one flying pursued by a blackbird with a yellow bill in what seemed to be not a very friendly manner. I am sure we all welcome the English nightingale as an Empire bird, but I do hope we don't get a lot of Kookaburras. New Zealand is very different from Australia and we should do all that is possible to maintain our natural distinction.
