STOWAWAY ON MAHENO.
TERM OF IMPRISONMENT. A chargo of slowing away on the steamer Maheno from Sydney to Auckland was preferred in the Police Court yesterday against Harry William Newland, aged 30, who admitted the offence. Sub-Inspector McCarthy stated that Newland had left the Dominion for Australia by working his passage across, but apparently did not find conditions in the Commonwealth congenial. Ho had then stowed away on the Maheno in order to return to New Zealand and had been discovered in the firemen's quarters in the forecastle the first day out. The fare was £fj 10s, and accused had no money. Sentence of 14 days' imprisonment was imposed by tho magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt.
