YOUNG AUCKLANDER'S RISE.

IMPORTANT SINGAPORE WORK.

BUILDING LARGE GRAVING DOCK.

A young Aucklandcr who has risen rapidly in the profession of civil engineering, Mi. James Collctt Dickinson, 8.E., M.1.C.E., arrived yesterday irom Eng- • land by tho Rangitiki on his way back to Singapore, whore ho is to superintend the construction ol a largo graving dock at tho new naval base.

After an absence of seven years in England, Mr. Dickinson is making a brief visit to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Dickinson, of Heme Bay. He is an old boy of the Auckland Grammar School, where ho won a university entrance scholarship. After a year at Auckland University College he took the civil engineering course at Canterbury College, gaining the B.E. degree in 1922. He then spent nearly a year on the Auckland Harbour Board'",? engineering staff. Having been awarded tho New Zealand University's travelling scholarship in engineering, ho went to Britain, where he gained valuable experience upon large constructional works.

Mr. Dickinson entered the service of Sir John Jackson, Limited, one of the bestknown British contracting firms. In recent years ho had much to do with the head office end of tho firm's contract for building the great Nag Hammadi Barrage across tho Nile, a £2,000,000 work, which Sir John Jackson, Limited, won from German competitors by a margin of £20,000. The barrage is situated 70 miles north of Luxor, and forms a new link in the great Egyptian water conservation system. The graving dock to bo constructed at Singapore will supplement the great iloating dock which was completed in England and towed out to the new base a year or so ago. The new dock represents several years' work. Mr. Dickinson expects to leave for the East, via Sydney, a fortnight hence. •
