RACING ORGANISATION.

Benefits to riders. The dirt track clubs operating in tho main centres of the Dominion htii'G formed a Control League which has boeil granted affiliation with tho Auto-cycle Union of Now Zealand, The new league will control dirt-track racing and has laid down specifications for the construction of tracks. It is now universally recognised that for safety's sake a cinder circuit must not bo less than 440 yards, and no A.C.IJ. rider will be permitted to ride on a track smaller than theso dimensions. Tho promoters will secure a certain amount of protection from tho League, hut on tho other hand the riders will, through the A.C.U. liavo direct representation on tho control committees of tho various race meetings. Exchange of riders is assured and 1 lie affiliation of the New Zealand and Australian Leagues will add further benefits. Tho Auckland season opens shortly and tho club announces that two English lady riders will visit tho Dominion during tho summer, Miss Fay Tavlor nnd Miss Asquith having both notified their intention of journeying overseas. THE RELIABILITY TRIAL. Tho result of the Sports Club's Reliability Trial, a win for J. Carter (Caltliorpe) was not a surprise, for the general opinion among competitors was that tho machine had been one of tho most consistent performers and" one of tho best behaved machines in tho wet and greasy conditions. M. Robinson (lloyal Enfield and sidc-car), who accounted for second place reported on his arrival at the final check that the trip had been absolutely trouble-free and that his motor had functioned perfectly. Tho very high percentage of finishers and the small number of marks lost was a tributo to tho reliability of the modern motor-cycle and fully demonstrated its adaptability to country conditions. \ ~~ ~ " THE HOUR RECORD. A. Denlv, who recently created a new 500 c.c. hour record, with his A.J.S. at an average speed of 104.5 m.p.b., has not been left in possession of tho coveted honour for very long. Now comes word that G. W. Laccy (Grindlav-Peerless J.A.P.), who previously held tho record has actually covered 105.25 miles in tho hour. His performance is all tho moro outstanding as ho finished in the dark and covered an extra three, laps through not being able to sco the signal to stop. CINDER TRACKS. Tho Cinder Tracks of Great Britain, closed down for the winter this week. Several of the best of the British riders propose to visit Australia and New Zealand and a team of Australians returning home will compete at tho Western Springs dirt track. ADVANTAGES OP AIR CLEANERS. The main advantage of an air-cleaner is that ifc prevents grit entering the engine, so reducing wear, of the piston and cylinder. The instrument also eliminates tho hiss that is prevalent with some types of carburetter, and tends to reduce the socalled carbon deposit, which is actually composed in a large degree of silicate deposits —in other words, road dust. Its main disadvantage is that there is generally a slight reduction in maximum speed. If, as is probable, a very small decrease in maximum speed does not matter, it would be an excellent plan to make the addition. CHINESE METHODS. Owners of truck fleets in Chiua find that the payment of a monthly "bonus to drivers who keep their trucks out of the shop has proved a successful way of reducing repairs. Eager to earn extra money the track driver handles his vehicle with greater care, and makes necessary minor repairs himself, instead of taking it to the shop. This system of keeping down truck repairs to a minimum was suggested to truck owners by an age-old Chinese custom practised in the medical profession. Since time immemorial, the Chinese business man has been accustomed to pay his family physician a certain sum for keeping him well. Payments stop when he falls ill. NOTES. There are now over 41,500 motor-cycles registered in the Dominion. Motor-cyclists in Great. Britain are increasing at tho rate of 20,000 per annum.. An English motor-cyclist was recently fined for creating a nuisance by emptying carbide on the roadside. Tho Motor-Cvclo Show, in connection with tho British Motor Olympia will be held at the end of November. Two English motor-cyclists, brothers, havo just completed a tour of Wales. Their respective ages are 75 and 70. During 1928 there were 31,778,203 motor vehicles registered throughout tho world, of which America licensed 24,493,124 and Great Britain 1,318,169. A slight hardening of motor-cycle prices is anticipated in Great Britain. Tho majority of 1930 models)' will in all probability cost a littlo moro than their 1929 predecessors. Among the numerous unusual causes of mishap brought to tho notice of tho English 11.A.C. is one in which a rabbit bocame entangled in the front wheel of a motor-cycle, damaging tho wheel beyond immediate repair, although tho rider was not even unseated.
