THE POET LAUREATE.
DR. BRIDGE'S NEW POEM. Having heard rumour that Dr. Bridges, the Poet Laureate, was about to " publish a new poetic masterpiece," a representative of the London Sunday Express repaired a few- weeks ago to the poet's home at Oxford, with the object of learning the truth. This is what ho wrote:— " Mrs. Bridges received me. We talked about the weather, and I gently led the conversation to the subject of my mission. 'ls Dr. Bridges writing a new poem V I asked. ' I do not know,' replied Mrs. Bridges. ' I will go and ask iiim.' " I waited, tense and listening. From the room above me I could hear a deep bass rumble. Even at that distance it sounded decisive and short. Thor was thundering! Jlrs. Bridges came back. ' I am sorry, but he says . . lie says that he has no message for you.' " A cablegram published in the Herald oji October 25 stated that Dr. Bridges had celebrated his 85th birthday by publishing a new poem of 4000 lines, entitled, " The Testament of Beauty," dedicated to the King.
