THE VANISHING KAURI.
Thev stood in their strength and grandeur, Where now are those forest giants Proud kings of a vast domain, That fame to our Northlands gave. Thev flourished in countless number Tho wind's dirge mournfully answered O v cr mountain, valley and plain. Bewailing the fallen brave. Their statelv columns tow'ring, By ruthless hands they have perished, Gleamed grey in the faded light. Their grave is tho mills wide maw, Grand pillars of God's Own temple, Their royal bodies are feeding Proclaiming His power and might. Tho of the hungry saw. Aloft in their wide-spread branches, And now but a remnant lingers The wild wind whistled amain, Lone monarchs of that great line, Or crooned through tho leafy bowers And cattle ant» sheep find pastures A lingering low refrain. * V\ here flourished that lordly pine. Then hear a prayer for the Kauri, t jjl Grand work of*tho Master's hand, And save for your children's children .The pride of thoir native land. —From Ellen Dally, Waiki.
