THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE. BRIGHTER TONE APPARENT. A brighter tone was apparent on the Auckland Stock Exchango yesterday, and for tho first timo for some weeks fluctuations swung toward firmness. This feature was particularly noticeable in banks. The downward trend of Commercials of Australia received a definite check, and the market for those shares recovered 9d during the day. A late sale on Thursday was recorded at the first call at 25s 6d, and after that sales were made at 25s 10d, 25s 9d, 25s lOd and 26s 3d. At tho final call buyers offered 26s 7d, compared with 25s 6d on tho previous day, and sellers moved up from 25s 8d to 27s without any business resulting. New South Wales were done on the Sydney register at £47 2s 6d, compared with the last local sale at £47 10s. More were sought 5s dearer than on Thursday at £47 ss, sellers £47 15s. Offers for New Zealands and Unions of Austr.ilia were also slightly firmer. In the loan and agency group the demand was weaker. Goldsbrough-Morts were done 3d firmer at 445, and offers were also firmer at 43s 9d. The only other inquiry was for Dalgetys, which were sought at £l3 10s. Coals were little changed, tho demand remaining strong. Renown ordinaries had sale 9d hotter at 17s 3d. In gas Aucklands changed hands one penny dearer at 24s lOd, inquiry being continued at 24s 9d. In shipping business was clone in Northern Steams at 14s lOd, one penny easier than the market price a month ago. In breweries Staples were done at the current price, 535, after which there were no further quotations. Interest in other shares was steady. Increased activity in the miscellaneous group was accompanied by moderate price movement, the general tendency being toward firmness. There were no quotations for Colonial Sugars, which were listed ex div. Hnyward's Pictures mado a current-price sale at 18s, and New Zealand Farmers' Fertilisers were similarly done at 225, there being a demand for more at the same figure. Inquiry for Robinson Ice Creams was made at late rates, and the first transaction for about six- weeks was recorded 9d firmer at 25s 3d. The mining section was fairly firm at late levels. Waihis were quoted ex div. at 12s 7d, buyers 12s 6d.
