Machin, of Christehurch, has returned from a visit to Auckland. Mrs. IT. S. E. Turner, who was visiting 'Auckland, has returned to Christchurch. Mrs.' C. H. Drysdale, of Herno Bay, leaves to day for a brief visit to Hamilton. Miss Maun sell, of Masterton, is on a visit to Auckland and is staying at Braeburn. Mrs. Armstrong, of Mastorton, is a visitor to Auckland and is staying at Braeburn. ' - - Mrs. B. Buttle, of Boundary Road, v Jlount Eden, has returned from a visit to Wellington. Mrs. W. A. Crawford, who spent the winter months in' Auckland, has returned to Dunedin. Mrs. L. Williams, of Wellington, is visiting Auckland, and is staying at tho Grand Hotel. Miss Molly Bernstein, of New York, is visiting Auckland and is staying at the Hotel Cargen. Mrs. G. Bradley, of Philadelphia, is visiting Auckland and is staying at tho Grand Hotel. Mrs. W. Webster,,of Siam, is visiting the Dominion and is at present staying at the Grand Hotel. Mrs. H. Roche, of Cambridge, is tho guest of Mrs. Seth Smith, of Victoria Avenue, Remuera. Miss Meredith, of Mount Albert Road, left by the limited yesterday morning for s visit to Wellington. Miss Dusolina Giannini, the noted young cpe:'atic soprano, with her mother, Mrs. A. Giannini, is stayihg at the Hotel Cargen. ■ Mrs. W. Wardell and Miss Mary Wardell, of Te Whiti, Masterton, are visitors to Auckland and are staying at Braeburn. Mrs. G. Bowron, president, Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Purchase and Miss Beck, members of the executive of tho Methodist Women's Missionary Union, have arrived in Auckland for tho missionary conference. , The Stanley Bay Croquet Club season was opened on the lawns at Mrs. Cleland s home, Stanley Point. The president, Mrs. Cleland, welcomed the members and friends. Afternoon tea was served by the " ladies and croquet, was played, a very pleasant time being spent. Miss S. Robertsdn, of Remuera, has since leaving Auckland in .May been travelling in Australia, and staying for some time at Colombo. She reached England at tho end of August by the Ormonde on a pleasure trip/ Miss Robertson intends to visit Switzerland for the winter sports and then to go to the South of France. The monthlv meeting of the Manurewa branch of the "League of Mothers was held in the Manurewa Town Hall last week. Tho president, Mrs. McCallum, presided over a large gathering of members and friends. Dr. Hastings, of Ponsonby, gave nn interesting address on the moulding • of tho characters of young children. Afternoon tea was served by tho ladies, this bringing a pleasant gathering to a close. The Ponsonby branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union met in St. Stephen's Hall last week, Mrs. Lee Cowie, district president of the W.C.T.U., presiding. After an address given by Mrs. Leo Cowie, Miss Read reported upon a visit to tho conference of the Baptist Women's Missionary Union, to whom she conveyed the greetings of tho l ' n >° ri - Being Maori Day, Sister Ivy Jones, Methodist deaconess, working among the Maori women and girls in the Auckland district, gavo an interesting talk on her work. Afternoon tea brought tho afternoon to a close. To celebrate Nelson Day the ladies of tho executive of the League were tho guests of Mrs. C. T. H. Palmer wife of tho president, at morning tea at the Lyceum Club yesterday. Tho following were present: —rMrs. John Alexander, wifo of the patron; Mrs. Gallaugher, president of the ladies' branch; and Miss Wallace, lion, secrotary; Mrs. Cleland, president of tho Devonport branch; Mis. N. Clover, Mrs.' Hull, Mrs. Connors, wife of the chairman; MesdameS IfwersOn, of the. girls' branch; C. H. Palmer, L. Thompson, Stroater, Miss Herrold and Miss Statharn. A mofit enjoyable timo was spent, and Miss Statham returned thanks to Mrs. I aimer for the very kind way in which she had • entertained them all. Mrs. R. P. Dane, of Huapai, gave a dance at her residence on Friday evening ns a farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Pearcc, who aro leaving the district. Mrs. Dane received her guests in a frock of black georgetto and lace, and was assisted liy her daughter, Miss Thora Dane, ,who woro a frock of biscuit figured ninon. iTho evening was spent pleasantly with dancing and novelty game»j and after supper was served a presentation was inado to Mr. yjd Mrs. Pearco to express tho good wishes of their many friends. Among those present were: Mrs. v\. Horsman, Mrs. ,W. E. Garry, Mrs. A. Duncan, Mrs. R. Cales, Mrs. G. Outram, Miss E. Barnes, Miss Peggy Shuttleworth Miss F. Gould, Miss It. Garbalino and Miss Merle Horsman. Tho Hillsborough Croquet Club held its oHicial opening ■of tho season on Satur - day. Mrs. Thompson, president, welcomed tho visitors, who included representatives from many clubs. Mr. G. C. Munns, M.l\, was also present. Mrs. Thompson played the first ball and declared the greens open. Progrcssivo croquet was played, tho winners being:—Mrs. Harbutt for the A, and Mrs. Roso for tho B section. Winners of competitions were:- —Mrs. McLean, Miss Grenvillo. Later Mrs. Thompson entertained tho gathering ht afternoon .tea. Among those present wero Mesdames Schnaucr, Keesing, president and secretary respectively of tho Auckland Croquet Centre; Mesdames Stringer (Whangarei).
