RAILWAY BRIDGE BURNED.
MANY SLEEPERS DAMAGED.
DELAY CAUSED TO TRAFFIC. [Br TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] DUNEDIN. Saturday. A fire occurred on the sleepers of a bridge on the Central Otago railway line last night aud caused damage which considerably delayed the train service to-day. The bridge on which the fire occurred is an iron one near Flat Stream, about four miles above Hindon, and 31 miles from Dunedin. A large number of sleepers and stringers were damaged, making the bridge unsafe for traffic. The Central Otago train which was due to leave Dunedin at 7.52 a.m. to-day was held up, but it was ultimately despatched at 10.30 a.m. Waggons containing sleepers and material for repairs were attached to the train and a gang of workmen was sent to carry out the work.
The causo of the outbreak is not known. It is possible that it was caused by a piece of smouldering coal falling from an engine and tho breeze fanning it to flame during the night. About 70 of th<* sleepers, which are of hardwood and closely packed, were reported to have been damaged.
