RAIDS BY POLICE.
QUANTITY OF LIQUOR SEIZED
THREE PREMISES VISITED.
ALLEGED "SLY-GROG" SELLING.
About 300 bottles of beer and stout and a small quantity of spirits were seized by the police on Saturday evening when raids were carried out on three premises alleged to have been used for "sly-grog" selling. Most of the liquor, about 200 bottles, was removed from a bouse in Wellesley Street West, which was raided by Ser-. geant Anniss and a party of four constables from the central station between 8.30 and 9 o'clock. The police made their entrance quietly, all exits being watched. Apart from the occupier of the house, no persons were found on the premises. The liquor was found in a room on the ground floor. At the same time two parties of constables, under Senior-Sergeant Flanagan and Sergeant Felton respectively, operated from the Newton station. The first party proceeded to a house in Beresford Street and a room was entered by two doors. The occupier of the house and six young men were found in the room. A large quantity of beer and stout and a bottle of whisky were removed.
A fish-shop in Karangahape Road was visited by the party under Sergeant Felton. In a room at the rear of the shop were found several bottles of ale and stout and a bottle cf gin. The proprietor of the shop was the only occupier of the premises at the time.
