NOTES ON THE RACING.

SOME SMART PERFORMANCES.

ACCIDENTS IN LAST EVENT,

[BY TELECEAW. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday.

King's Voyage looked a winner from tho start of the Innovation Handicap at the New Brighton Mooting to-day. In striking contrast to some of his other performances of late he began auickly and the issue was never in doubt. In tho straight Great Dillon was second when ho broke and was passed by Nancy McKinncv. who also went in the air. Groat Dillon was auickly into his stride attain and he osrain challenged King's Voyage. D. "\Vithera. driving tho latter, hnd only to shake tho reins and King's Voyage won very comfortably. Ho improved seven seconds on his handicap time and even tho maximum penalty allowed will not stop him from winning again.

Nancy MoKinney was early in a good position but broke just when it seemed she might pay a dividend. Great Burton showed plenty of speed but broke several times. Scuttlo lost ground at tho start and Bell Heather was tho only other to show any promise. Tho winner paid a double figure dividend. Cushln, d'Or, who, on a question of time alone, seemed particularly well treated in the Shirley Handioap. was made a warm favourite. Though she raced a good deal hotter than sho had done at Methven the previous week, she found ono in Jackio Logan just too good for her. Jackio Logan took the lead in the straight nnd was challenged by Cushla d'Or, Whilo the latter was beina hard driven Berry had also to shake up Jackio Logan to do his best. It was a good tussle, but fifty yards from the post Cushla d'Or tired and Jackio Logan won comfortably. Tho winner has not been in Berry's hands for » great time but this is tho second win secured. He is a much improved pacer. Oiaio Boso hung on to gain third rlaco but there was not a great deal of merit in her performance. Tho dividends returned were email.

.Tune do Oro was a very warm favourite for tho "Waimniri Handicap, while the Sun-shower-Jcan McElwyn bracket w&s only slightly belter supported than Sir Author. It was » Cue race from start to finish. Be-

fore entering (lie straight Sir Author was in" second" place to June do ■ TD'r<v . whos§ driver was netting busy 09 hin mare. Sir Author soon settled the pretensions of, Junedo Oro but then Sunshower, Billy Soa and Jean McElwyn challenged' the leader. Tho last-named failed by a narrow margin to reach Sir t Author, while Billy Sea was right up. ' Sir Author won we 11,., but ho seemed very tender after the race. Ha may be on the winning list again shortly. Jean McElwyn put up a great performance from 96 yards behind and she was driven a nice race by R. Humphreys. Sunshower is a more than useful sort who may win a race shortly. Billy Sea freut A fine race to finish within half a length of tho winner.

Eugene de Oro, strength of his Methven running, was' greatly fancied for tho Spring Handicap, while conqueror on that occasion, was allowed to go out at a good price, When the pacemakers had had enough Arikitoa and Eugene do Oro ctmo through and in a short, sharp tussle, the former soon got the upper hand and went on to win rather, comfortably, while Eugene de Oro, eased in the last fow strides, was a good distance ahead of Patsy Phegan. Evidently Arikitoa was improved by his race at Methven. Ho finished straight and true and there is no reason why he should not win over two ipiles. Eugene de Oro is speedy but not a good stayer. Shadowland and Ilaydock were next to the placed horses and tho latter may win a race before long.

New Mclford was a short-priced favourite in tho Avon Handicap, and with half the journey gone ho looked to have a royal chance. At tho distance post he was showing tho way, but Nelson Ata, driven a patient race, had a good deal in reserve, and finished strongly to beat New Melford. who went to a break as the post was reached. Nelson Ata gav« a really good display of trotting, and ho stayed on better than he has done of late. Writer, after being last', to begin, turned on a great burst of speed and. trotting faultlessly, almost overhauled New Metford. At one stage he must have b»en standing; the leaders up a hundred and fifty yards. Ho has won at the pacing gait, but it seems that, ho has only to become solid to win among the straighttrotters. There was keen speculation on the Brighton Handicap, Lough Neagh# who has failed repeatedly, being made a hot favourite. Lough Neagh commenced smartly and with half the journey gone he looked a likely winner. Over the last part, however, Pearl Logan came with a good run and got the verdict by a _ head. Lougll Neagh did not seem to finish like a good one and he is evidently a bit over-rated. A big field went to the poßt for the Beach Handicap and backers who supported Invader and Muriel de Oro came a bad crash. At the finish Muriel de Oro, Apex, Avonwood, Auguate Dillon, Billy Sea- and elusive all came with a great dash and only a head separated the bracketed pair as the line was crossed. The dividend was a double figure one. Billy Sea and Exclusive. are both trained by N. C. Price at Rangiora. and ho lias dono a lot of good with a. pair that were not reckoned to be of much use. The Farewell Handicap was a chapter of accidents. The field had travelled three furlongs when Red Audubon, ridden by A. Holmes, came down and over him toppled Shadowland (C. Ring), Cullensville (D. O'Connell). Hector's Own (M. Holmes), and Rap (D, Benaott), while Anki hadHiis chance extinguished and was pulled un. White Sun and Sunfish just managed to avoid the smash. Sunfish won comfortably. The winner is a Southland-bred gelding and Berry's horsemanship had a good deal to do with the final result. The accident extinguished the chances of several horses, but it is doubtful under any circumstances whether Sunfish would have been beaten. AUCKLAND CLUB'S MEETING. REHANDICAPS ANNOUNCED.
