NEW ZEALAND CHEESE.
EXPORTS TO AUST RALIA.
MELBOURNE MARKET PRICES*
xr o r the first time since, the imposition of tho fluty of 6d a lb. on imported choose, New Zealand chccso is being offered for sale in the Melbourne market. The Argus of September 20 said:—"The quantity landed is small and it, is required "to meet a shortage of good semimatured cheese. The price paid was Bid a lb. f.0.b., making the landed cost about Is 4id a lb., so that it is well ablo to compete in tlio Melbourne market, where matured cheese is quoted up to Is od a lb. Such prices are exceptional and they, liavo not been reached for many years. The shortage of .matured cheese is due to the high prices which ruled for new cheese some months ago, as merchants were unwilling to take tho risk of storing cheese at the high price. _ "The comparatively high prices which have been obtained for cheese this winter have Ijeen the result of limited production forced upon cheese factories by the unprofitable market in the spring and Bummer months. Tho increase in the Paterson plan export bounty, added to tho value of milk, made it difficult for cheesomakers to compete against butter factories for supplies, and caused many of them to cease producing. '. "Although tho market for cheese at present is very firm, becauso of tho shortage in supplies, cheesemakcrs are apprehensive of conditions in the ensuing season, owing to the high value placed upon butter-fat. If production on a norma, scale ,is resumed it, would bo ahnos im possible to hold cheese prices at tM equivalent of those which nr ? lained for butter in Even the restriction, of supplies tori a, may not solve the State*.factories may if prices here prove attractive to them..
