THE ELSIE WALKER CASE.
Sir, —I heartily agree with " Looking for Justice " and many others regarding the Elsie Walker case. The subject is in everyone's mouth; wherever one goes one- hears this cane discussed. For the life of me I cannot imagine what the Governmen*, is thinking of to allow this, one of the worst crimes in the history of New Zealand, to pass into the list of unsolved crimes, and, thanks to the New Zealand police, they are few in number. The fairness of our British justice is known the world over. Do not let us be ashamed of it. Let us practise what we preach and reopen the inquest on Elsie Walker. The police have failed certainly, hut they may not be altogether to blame. Tho police in many cases do not. get enough help from the' general public. Information is often withheld from the police, nob with the idea of helping the criminal, but many persons do not iike a policeman or detective approaching them on a subject of this nature, and they dread the idea of appearing in Court as a witness. There is nothing to dread or be afraid of, but there it is, and owing to this the police often fail, and the first thing we do is to blame them, when really it .is our own fault, and the criminal is allowed lo go free, and perhaps the next victim will be tlje very person who by speaking up could have put him under lock 3nd key. If every law-abiding person would look on the police and detective force as friends and not as enemies, and help them in every way in detecting crime, their work would be much easier and their life much more pleasant arid there would be fewer unsolved crimes lo record. Fairplax.
