MOUNT EDEN SCHOOL.

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS.

REUNION OF OLD SCHOLARS

This year, the Mount Eden district school celebrated its golden jubilee. Fifty years ago, the first school on tho site was opened, and the jubilee is to ho, marked by a reunion of old scholars, to be held in the school grounds on the afternoon of Saturday, December 7. Opportunity will also be taken to raise funds for improvements to the grounds. Tho first Mount Eden school was opened in 1877 in a small hall at the corner of Mount Eden and Valley Roads, the headmaster being Mr. Percy E. Stevens. However, on April 1, 1879, the school was opened on its present site,' the Rev. P. S. Smallfield being its headmaster. On the opening day 23 pupils were presented for admission, and there were 20 additional scholars on the second day. Of this number, several are still living in the Mount Eden district.

With the growth of the district as a residential suburb, the number of scholars on the-roll rapidly increased, and in 1882 there were so many applicants that many had to be turned away. Ever since its foundation, the school has been noted for its fine grounds. It has its .own swimming baths and gardens, but funds are required for certain improvements to the grounds. It is hoped that there will be a large muster of old pupils on the occasion of tho jubilee reunion.
