MINIMISING FLOODS.

GRANT FOR CLEARING WILLOWS.

Atlvice that a grant of £3OO will be placed on the. Estimates this session of Parliament for clearing willows from the lower reaches of the Mangatawhiri Stream .has been received from the Minister of Public Works, Hon. E. A. Ransom, by Mr., J. N. Massey, M.P., chairman of the Franklin CounJy Council. Mr. Massey has pointed out that such clearance would give the water a freer and quicker flow to the Waikato River, with the result that flooding in the fertile Mangatawhiri Valley, along the middle reaches of the stream, would be reduced. The Government has agreed to make tho grant on the assurance of Mr. Massey that tho County will see that the work is properly maintained by preventing the regrowth of willows along the length cleared.
