ENGLAND'S OLDEST INN.
END OF LONG HISTORY.
The Chandos Arms, Edgeware, England's oldest tavern, has ceased to exist as an inn, and in future " thirsty souls" in search, of a. bitter will have to look elsewhere. Instead of supplying refreshments, this old house, which . dates back to the days of William the Conqueror, is (o become a booking-office for motor-coaches. The Chandos Arms is almost as old as the groat English family after which it is called. Sir John Chandos fought at the Battle of Crccy, saved the BlackPrince's life at Poitiers, and was Edward lll.'s lieutenant in France. Dick Turpm, the famous highwavmnn. lived at the Chandos Arms, and* Handel, who was in residence for a couple of years on so at the. Canons, a fabulous palace built by the Duke of Chandos;. 1 lie. wealthy paymaster of tiio forces abroad, used-to visit, tho tavern every evening for a mug ot at'was at the inn that Handel first met- the blacksmith- whom 1 lie - immortal, ised.
