WORK ON MAIN HIGHWAY.

TAURANGA, Friday,
The Tauranga County Council at its meeting to-day unanimously decided to endorso a letter forwarded by tho Waitemata County Council to the Minister of Finance and the Local Government Loans Hoard protesting against the extra burden cast upon ratepayers by the heavy sinking fund in respect of short poriod loans. The council agreed that an area set apart for road purposes in the Ake Ake district be disposed of for farming purposes. The council accepted the tender of Mr. F. Spreadborough, £2725, for improvement to the main highway in the To Putin riding; and also the tender of Mr. W. J. Clare, Papatootoe, for the erection of the Poiigakawa Bridge. Tho district engineer of railways advised that the decking of tho overhead bridge near Waimata was badly decayed in several places. He was arranging to have repairs effocted and would forward the account to the council. Tho clerk's reply that the council could not accept any liability was approved.
