EXPANSION OF INDUSTRY.
PEOPLE'S SAVINGS INCREASE.
GROWTH OF FOREIGN TRADE. (Received October 4. 6.15 p.m.) Times Cable. LONDON. Oct. 3. Tho annual report of the British Commercial Counsellor at Berlin, Mr. ,T. W. F. Thelwall, has been issued by the Department of Overseas Trade. This emphasises Germany's general prosperity. Notwithstanding the slowing down of industry owing to re-equipment, rationalisation and reparation payments, savings bank deposits have increased by £1315,000,000. The iron and steel trades havo overcome the critical period, contrasting with the British position, tho shipyards and engineering works are better employed, and the motor industi-y shows a phenomonal expansion, production having increased by £25,000,000 sinco 1926.
Foreign trade has expanded £70,860,000 as compared with the British increase of £14,000,000.
The report refers to tho extraordinary elasticity of German commerce and the ability of German manufacturers to force Up exports to a remarkable degree.
