PILLAGING OF CARGO.

WHARF LABOURER CHARGED

"Evidently pillaging is a common game," /said Mr. F. Iv. Hunt, S.M., in tho Police Court on Saturday, when Thomas Joseph Glover, aged 25, a wharf labourer, was charged with stealing 51b. of butter and a leg of mutton valued at 2ls 6d, the property of the New Zealand Shipping Company, and with receiving three singlets, valued at 9s. Through his counsel, Mr. McLiver, accused admitted receiving the articles. (JhioM)etective Hammond said accused hud been employed on the Hororata just prior to the vessel's departure for London. A box of butter had been pillaged and tho mutton was taken from the ship's hold. The articles were found in accused's house by detectives. The singlets had been stolen during the vessel's inward trip, and accused had evidently purchased them from a member of tho crew. "Accused states he purchased tho property from n man in a city hotel," said Mr. McLiver. "Whpra ho, ot' course, did not know," remarked the magistrate. Counsel said accused had known the man to bo a member of tho Ilororata's crow, and ho should have known they were pilloged goods. He asked for leniency, as accused would automatically lose his position. Accused was remanded for sentence until to-morrow, pending n report from the probation officer. A request for bail was retuaod.
