CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday
The hearing of the case of a man who stole over £34 from a city hotel was resumed this morning. Accused, aged 35 years, was admitted to probation for the term of two years. With him appeared a man, aged 25, who was charged with receiving £l4 13s 2d from the first man, well knowing that the money was dishonestly obtained. Mr. E. C. Lewoy, S.M., who was on tho Bench, suppressed the names of both the accused. Tho charge against the younger man was dismissed tinder tho First Offenders' Probation Act.
" These two men wero in a local hotel office when a bag of money was brought in," said Detective-Sorgeant Young. " Tho older man, when they wero left alone, stole tho money unknown to the other. When they were walking down the street he told the younger man that he had stolon tho money and that ho would share it. Tho younger man demurred, but finally accepted £l4 13s 3d. After inquiries Detectives Laugeson nnd McKonzio went to tho older man's house. Ho bolted when he saw them."
" Tho probation officer has given me a searching report about tho older man," said tho magistrate. " I find it difficult to see why he did this thing. Ho has had a sharp lesson now and I will admit him to probation for a period of two years. In the case of tho younger man I am going to adopt tho suggestion of the counsel and the probation officer and take the extreme course of dismissing him."
