MORTALITY AMONG LAMBS.

LOSSES IN NORTH OTAGO,

REMEDY NOT YET DISCOVERED.

[ny TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

DUNEDIN. Saturday.

Tlio problem of mortality among young lambs is again causing considerable contern in North Otago, where heavy losses are already reported. At a meeting of fanners it was stated that a cure had not yet been found, but some old-timo remedies seemed to have good results.

Mr. John Frasor, chairman, stated that where lambing had taken place before the beginning of the month farmers were having trouble. The department was fully alive to tho seriousness of the trouble but was as much in tho dark as the farmers. It appeared to be a case of over nutrition. One farmer had expressed the theory to him that tho trouble would bo overcome if cattle woro grazed with the ewes, which should be given plenty of exercise. Another expressed tho opinion t iiat the whole, flock should be taken for a two hours' run daily and another advocated yarding tho sheep for a whole day weekly. Mr. .1. 0. McDonald said the trouble was in lambs three weeks to a month old. Ho was confident travelling was good. Last year he gave tho owes plenty of cxerciso and had no losses.

Tt, was agreed that, everything that could be done was being done.
