DIRT TRACK MACHINES.

i Many dirt track riders in England are ! experiencing disappointment with their machines. Much of tho trouble, however. has been traced to lack of attention and tho rough and ready methods of some of tho mechanics. Thero can bo no doubt that a successful star rider really requires two mounts in casa of a breakdown, but for the ordinary competitor ono machino properly maintained should give service. Now that tho time is drawing near for tho opening of tho Auckland dirt track season motor-cyclists who contemplate taking up tho sport should lose no timo in ordering their machines and seeing to tho necessary leather equipment and splinterless goggles.

THE GERMAN GRAND PRIX.

Yet nnother British victory was scored when the German Grand Prix was held recently at tho famous Nurburg Rinp;. This timo the successful rider was If. G. Tyrell-Smith, who brought homo his 499 c.c. Rudge-Whitworth to a thoroughly well-deserved triumph at an average speed of 63.38 m.p.h., 2.36 m.p.h. higher .than last year's winning speed. Tho victory was repeated in tho 250 c.c. and 1000 c.c. classes respectively by an English rider on a machino bearing a German namo and a German rider on an English machino. S. A. Crabtree (246 Hecker-J.A.P.) and Erich Patzold (493 Sunbeam) were tho two men, W. L. Handley was another to record a semi-British victory by winning the 350 c.c. class with his all-conquering Motoaacocho.

In the 175 c.c. class the speedy little D.K.W. was successful in taking first and second places. The course—which is owned by a company, and does not consist of public roads—has but one straight section in tho whole of its 17£ miles. Wido, and (with a few exceptions) of good surface, it twists and climbs among tho wooded mountains like & scenic railway in a pleasure park. There aro climbs that might well figure in a reliability trial; descents of such steepness that even the passenger in a car with four-wheel brakes feeis alarm; and countless left and right hairpin and S-bends, many with a sheer drop beyond tho outer edge. If over a course were built to test both man and machine to the utmost, it is tho Nurbtirg Ring. Thero were 98 entries for tho fivo races, and of these 82 machines started but only 30 finished the course. Tho final placings were:— 175 c.o. RACE (12 Laps). Geisg (175 D."W.K.). 52.3 m.p.h. u. 1 250 e.c. RACE (13 Laps). 8. Crabtrce (Hecker-J.A.P.), 50.4 rn.n.h. 1 Frentzen (U.T.-J.A.P.). 57.1 m.p.h. SCO 0.0. RACE (14 Laps). Vf. L. Handler- (ifotosncoche).
