PADLOCKS OF THE VIKINGS.
Among gifts to tho Guildhall Musoum in London last year wcro two padlocks thought to bo of Viking or early Norman date. They were discovered during excavations at old St. Bartholomew's Hospital, on the site of tho City Ditch.
A quantity of Roman pottery found in Lombard Court confirmed tho opinion that tho first settlement of tho Romans was in that quarter of the city, states Mr. J. L. Douthwaite, -acting director, in his annual report. Alterations in Guildhall yard havo revealed « vaulted cellar lift, beneath tho surface, had been floored with plain red tiles lOin. square, and had probably been used as a wine cells*.
