FIRST DAY'S EVENTS.

HISTORIC GALLOPS WELL.

EY ARCHER. Weather and track conditions were pood for training operations yesterday and some interesting gallops were accomplished ca (he. outside ol the coarse proper at Avondale. where many visiting horses were galloped. The trestles were in closer thi.n earlier in the week, being out about and some smart times were recorded. There was a heavy dew an the' grass when the wark commenced, and as it dionppeared the going became faster, with tbe result that better times were registered after the breakfast interval than before. One of the most pleasing gallops was that of Historic, who hit ont. with plenty of freedom while leading Star Stranger, who went a mile, over the last seven furlongs. Others to gallop well were Air King and Awarere. Details of the work were as foEows:--COURSE PROPER. First to gallop were the two-year-olds Cylinder and Appeal. Piuthair indulged in a useful working gallop over a mile, which she covered in 1.54. Piathair showed signs of returning to form in rnnning Becond at her last start and is likely to make a solid showing under her light weight to-morrow.

Another decent gallop wu that of Maori Boy and Singleton, who finished abreast at the end of seven furlongs in 1.34 1-5. They ran the first three furlongs in 2Ss and at the finish Maori Boy was going tne strcmsrer.

The Flying Stakes candidates. Sil verm ire and Te Atiawa, were associated in a spin over five furlongs. They kept together for the first two furlongs ia 25 1-5. and then Silvern tine drew right away to finish well clear in LB. Silvermine was eased in the straight and would have ran much better time with something to kpiep him gallopingHone of the other gallops before tbe breakfast interval were very attractive, although Oil King went nicely in beating Carpal and Eantiqne over four furlongs in sis.

The Ta Atractutu trainer has been confined to hifi bed for some days and it may be a week or two before he recovers from his "ndisp ami cm. It is unfortunate for Looinb to be indisposed when he has so many horses racing and he will have the good wishes of racing men lor a speedy return tp health.

On the strength of good track efforts yesterday Historic and Awarere have sained fresh admirers and Historic ia now certain to retain his position as favourite for the Avondtue Cup. Aw2*rere is not so stronglv fnncied for his engagement in the Flying Stakes Handicap, but his effort, will ensure hia being a well-backed horse. II be were to repeat his very best, Awarere would certainly be a proposition for the best of his opponents.
