SEASON IN WAIKATO.
MORE COWS BEING MILKED.
DEMAND EXCEEDS SUPPLY.
(BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Thursday.
The demand for dairy cows is considerably in oxcess of tho supply in the Waikato markets, and high prices aro ruling for animals' of approved quality. Farmers are breeding rnoro heifer calves this year than usual', but it is considered that it will be at least two years before the supply of dairy cows approaches the domand- , , , . The increased number of cows -beinc milked this season is attributed moro to tho greater carrying capacity of the farms, due to top-dressing, than hirce areas being brought into cultivation. Iho threc-day-old calf trade also affects the position of dairymen this year to some extent. „ . . Pedigree hulls are selling well, ing that farmers are realising the need for increasing the butter-fat yield of their herds by roaring tho progeny of sires with certified butter-fat backing. Excellent results are being achieved by dairymen in following up the work of the herd-testers by systematic culling. All the dairy factories in tho district are exceedingly busy, and although the supply last month was somewhat retarded owing to the cold southerly winds, an increase has been noted this month. The season has opened under the. most favourable conditions and indications are for a record output of dairy produce.
