GREEK CLUB RAIDED.
CHARGES OF GAMBLING.
/ Exciting scenes were witnessed on a recent afternoon when the police raided a Greek club in Castiereagh Street, Sydney. Eighty arrests were made, 79 meri being charged with being found in a common gaming houso, ana one with being the keeper. Amusing attempts were made to evade , arrest. While one or two tried in broken English to make it known that they were there on "beezness," others vainly tried to saunter calmly out of the club. Most humorous of all were tho frantic endeavours of some to obtain a haircut. There is a barber's shop on the premises, arid as soon as it becamo known that a police raid had occurred Iho barber found his establishment crowded by customers. Others, unable to enter, clustered at the doorway, clamouring for an urgent hair cut. ■ The arrested men, as they were transported in five "Black Marias" to the police station, excited tho interest and speculation of passers-by. The police were able to approach tho premises without arousing suspicion, and they suddenly rushed into a rooin where everybody appeared to bo clustered round a long table. On the table coins were scattered, and all eyes were fixed upon a set of dice that had just been thrown. The dice and money were immediately ! seized.
