TRIP UP THE AMAZON.
VETERAN ENGINEER OF 70.

Mr. J. Woodcock, a. veteran of merely 70, has decided to travel from England and up the Amazon River in a 70ft. motor-boat. A chance friendship made on the'voyago from New Zealand to Southampton by the Corinthio decided him to undertake this adventurous voyage.
Mr. • Woodcock, an engineer by profession, said to a Daily Chronicle correspondent:—"l formed the acquaintance on the voyage of the Rev. A. W. Benton, who is a missionary. He told me-ho was going to the upper reaches of the Amazori'in a 70ft. motor r launch, and, tho upshot was that I took a post as his engineer. The parson will be the skipper. "Wo hope to strike a patch of nice weather, and if wo reach South America safely Ave shall make tho trip up tho •Amazon to tho remote part of tho upper reaphes, where Mr. Benton is. to'carry on his- missionary work.'' - \ v Mrl said that he left OS" land 45 years ago for Wellington, but dill not rearh that place until immediately before joining the Corinthic. "I went ashore at, Hobart," ho explained, "missing rejoining • the ship by. a few minutes; and found work at that port" Though ho Had since visitec} many parts of Now Zea'land- and Australia, he., added, he had never until the Corjnthib's call set foot in tho town which- was his destination when he sailed from England in 1884.
