SUCCESS OF QUEEN CARNIVAL

The Railway Department expects to complete its new refreshment rooms within a month. The structure, which is over 100 ft. in length, is designed on the latest pattern, and includes a large open fireplace, around which facilities will be provided for meals in cold weather. Tho new building has been necessitated by tho great influx of passengers consequent on the inauguration of tho Auckland-Tau-ranga express. Tho Paeroa Swimming Clubj under the guidance of Mr. W. B. Nicholas, _ l3 actively preparing for the approaching season, and is already assured of a greatly increased membership. A further fillip lias been given tho sport locally by tho presentation of a massive silver cup by Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P., a former Wellington sprint champion. It is stated locally that tho Minister of Health, tho Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, has called for a full investigation of complaints of the pollution of tho Waihou River by the discharge of untreated sewage at le Aroha.

Tho Paeroa queen carnival was terminated during tho week-end with an elaborate crowning ceremony, in which the winning queen, Miss Helen Matthews, was tho central figure. The carnival was organised by tho Mayor, Mr. W. Marshall) with an objectivo of £BSO. Such was the rcsponso, however, that a sum of £1550 was raised by voluntary subscription. The money, which carries a Government subsidy, will be utilised in improving the borough roads and streets, planting trees, beautifying the hospital grounds, &nd erecting a war memorial. Much of this work is already under way. ( Following on a discussion at last week s meeting of the Borough Council as to whether tho council should bo called on to entertain members of the railway commerce train party on November 15 ( Messrs. Edwards, P. E. Brenan, W. Marshall, W. D.' Nicholas, E. Flatt, D. Leach and H. J. Hare have headed a movement to reviva the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce, which has long been inoperative. It is felt that such a body would be glad to extend the hospitality of Paeroa to the visiting Aucklanders. A motor shunting engine, the first of its type to be used in the Dominion, is doing good work in the railway yards. The vehicle is capable of moving 300 tons.
