EMPIRE STUDENTS.
CONFERENCE AT MONTREAL.
SUMMARY OF THE RESULTS.
Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received September 17. 5.55 p.m.)
MONTREAL, Sept. 16
The Empire Students' Conference ended to day. The meeting place for 1933 was not fixed.
An Australian delegate said the conference had brought about a realisation among the delegates of the extraordinary complexity of the Empire and at the same time of the unity which underlies the differences of its component parts. When the conference opened the delegates were present as members 'of thenown parts of the Empire, but they left as citizens of the Empire.
It was urged that the students of the Australian Union should keep in close touch with their fellow-students in Britain. The National Union of Students in England should act as a clearing house for the universities and colleges of the Empire. The delegates expressed themselves as strongly in favour of Imperial preference. They recommended that debating teams should bo exchanged between tho Mother Country and the Dominions and between the Dominions themselves.
Another recommendation was that the National Unions should send athletic teams to Holland in 1930. Ihe Australian delegates extended an invitation to the National Unions of the northern countries to make tours of Australia. They offered all possible assistance. The system of residence, as practised at Sydney University, was strongly supported by delegates from those parts of the Empire where a similar system is being followed.
