MANGERE SCHEMES.
WATER AND SEWERAGE
REPORT TO COUNTY COUNCIL
Particulars cf the Mangere water supply end sewerage schemes were given in a report of the special committee appointed to investigate the matter at a meeting of Manukau County Council yesterday morning.
The county engineer reported that water in sufficient quantity had been located and that a second analysis of tho water taken from the bore had shown that it v.as necessary for it to be chlorinated before being used for drinking. Application had been made to the Mangere Domain Board for permission to erect another reservoir on tho domain and the commissioner of Crown lands for North Auckland had been communicated with relative to the use of the quarry reserve for water supply purposes and the erection of the necessary buildings. The engineer said that if the scheme was to be proceeded with immediately it would be necessary
to engage further engineering assistance for that particular work, as the present staff could not cope with the task unless it was spread over an indefinite time, owing to the amount of work already in hand! The council decided to engage an assist ant in the engineer's derailment. The possibility of utilising the septic tank already erected on the Lccleslon No. 2 Settlement hud been investigated by the engineer, who had found the proposal to be impracticable on account of the heavy expenses which would be incurred in obtaining a fall for the discharge of sewage. As an alternative, he had approached the engineer of the Auckland Harbour Board to ascertain tho possibility of the board giving its sanction for tho discharge of sewage into the JMantikau Harbour and the Tamaki Kivcr if septic tanks were erected at suitable places. The Harbour Board engineer ad vised that Ins board would probably not be in favour of the proposal, in view of the fact that the board, in conjunction with the Health Department and the Auckland Drainage Board, was formulating a schcmo for the construction of a main sewer to take all sewage from the upper reaches of the Manukau Harbour and to discharge it well away from closely populated areas. The council decided to defer tho Mangfre East sewerage scheme until definite information had been received concerning the proposed construction of tho main •ewer in the Manukau Harbour.
