TARANAKI BEATS AUCKLAND.

FOURTEEN POINTS TO ELEVEN. BRIGHT. OPEN EXHIBITION. [nv TELEC. RATO. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Saturday. Taranaki's changed team showed a, complete'reversal of form to-day when it defeated the Auckland tourists by 14 points to 11, after a bright, open game in which the football was often exhilarating and always fast. Taranaki lasted much better than in its two previous games. The forwards played a, splendid bustling game, ably supported hv the rearguard. The Auckland forwards played well but were rather overshadowed. The visiting hacks were often dangerous although they were very well marked.

The first, try came immediately after the commencement of the game. Following a good move by Baldwin, Guy and Watson, Walter forced his away over from a line-out. Tho kick failed. Taranaki, 3; Auckland, 0. Before long Taranaki notched a fine try when all tho backs handled for Watson to fly over in the corner. The kick was again unsuccessful. Taranaki 6; Auckland, 0.

The next score was a beauty. The ball travelled from Ilohaia to Walter, McLean, Eookes, Brown and Watson. Tho latter returned to Brown, who with Fookes exchanged several passes in brilliant fashion until Fookes dashed over. Ilohaia converted. Taranaki, 11; Auckland, 0. Bush then opened Auckland's score with a penalty goal. Taranaki, 11; Auckland, 3. Shortly afterwards Satherley sent his backs away in a movement which ended in Cammick scoring a neat try for Auckland. Bush converted. Taranaki, 11; Auckland, 8.

Near the end of tho spell Hohaia snapped up tho ball after a scrum and dived over Goodacro to score in the corner. The kick at goal failed, making the scores at half-time:—Taranaki, 1.4; Auckland, 8. The second spell was full of excitement. Taranaki was mainly on the offensive, and was very dangerous on numerous occasions, but Auckland was by no means a beaten team. Tho only try of the spell came when Cammick cut through to tho Taranaki fullback and sent Stoupo across in the corner after a good movement. Crawford crossed tho Auckland lino only to be recalled and Auckland was attacking when the final whistle sounded with the scored: —Taranaki, 14; Auckland, 11. Mr. J. S. King was referee. DEFEAT OF CANTERBURY. WELLINGTON'S BIG MARGIN. GREAT KICKING BY RAMSON. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Saturday. Saturday was an unfortunate day for Canterbury, which was defeated by Wellington in both the senior and junior representative Rugby games in overwhelming fashion. In the junior game it was beaten by 20 points to 3 and in the senior game by 34 points to 6.

In tho senior match Wellington had the benefit of a strong sun and a stiff breeze blowing behind it straight down the field in the first half, and piled up a score of 26 points to 0. Earn son was in splcr.djd goal-kicking form. Ho kicked two penalties and converted tries scored by Wilson, Elvy (2) and Julian. Play was tho whole time in Canterbury territory. For Wellington M. Xicholls made brilliant openings, and Elvy, the winger, was seen in great runs down the line. It was thought. Canterbury with tho wind behind it in the second spell would emulate Wellington's performance, but, although compelled frequently to force, the Wellington defence held and kept Canterbury's score down to six point;;—a penalty by Lilburne and a try by Innes. For Wellington Julian scored and Ramson goaled from the side lino against tho wind from about 40yds. out, a truly remarkable kick. Elvy was tho 'next scorer, the game ending:—Wellington, 34; Canterbury 6. Canterbury seemed to tire towards the end.
