WIN FOR CANTERBURY. [BACKS OUTCLASS SOUTHLAND J ' OLIVER SUSTAINS INJURY. [BX TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] • CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. By superior back play Canterbury beat Southland at Lancaster Park to-day by tho comfortable margin of 21 points to 3. The Southland backs lacked thrust, and certain brilliant moves by the Canterbury, rearguard were the deciding factors in the game. Carleton was not fit to play, and Oliver was injured toward the. end of the first spell, so that the match" gave little on which to base judgment of. the real strength of the Canterbury, hacks for the Ranfurly Shield match on Wednesday. The Canterbury forwards did well against their heavier opponents, securing the hall in the majority of the scrums and line-outs. Cottrell and Burrows, in the front rank of the scrum, proved an efficient pair of hookers. The forwards all worked well, showing no disinclination' for the solid, tight work. Indeed there was not one opportunist among them. Mullan, behind the Canterbury scrum, played his best game of the season, and sound displays were given by Lilljume, Hart and Steel. The teams were:— T Canterbury.—Harris, Hart, Oliver, Steel, Innes, Lilburne, Mullan, Scrimshaw, Cottrell, Burrows, Baird, Anderson, Manchester, Manning, Toby RobinBon. _ ~ Southland.—Norris. Stnbbs, Crosbie, Pickering, Bell,. Porter, Holden, Mahoney, Tinnock, Agnew, Salt, Purdue, McKenzie, Metcalfe, Southern. Lilburne kicked off for Canterbury, and the opening exchange of kicks left play in Southland territory. A dropped Sass from Lilburne to Scrimshaw allowed outhland to clear, and in a loose forward scramble the visiting forwards carried' play upfield to the Canterbury line. They ha'd a good scoring chiyice at least once, but tho backs were slow at hand-, ling the ball and were easily smothered. Pretty work by the Canterbury backs let tho ball out to Hart, wno gained much ground, taking play to the Southland twenty-five. Lilburne made a splendid effort to get through. His pass to Innes was intercepted, but Mullan camo to Canterbury's aid, cutting in and beating his man to give a pass to Lilburne, who dived over for a spectacular Steel failed to convert. Canterbury, 3; Southland, 0. The Southland forwards set up a vigorous attack after tho kick-off, but the homo forwards fought them back to midfieild, whero good passing by Lilburlio and Steel gave Hart his chance. The fast winger shook off a tackle and raced over for a brilliant try. St col's kick missed. Canterbury, 6; Southland, 0. The noxt score camo somo. minutes later.
