PHEASANTS IN THE DOMAIN.

Sir,—Arriving in Auckland Sunday morning, I received one of (he most delightful welcomes one could ever hope for from the feathered tribe, 'lhe ugly Newmarket tunnel passed, our train quickly swooped into the city. As wo passed tho Domain and close abreast tho Museum, with its fino bird array, a glorious cock pheasant rose from tho lailway grounds 011 tho sea side to greet us. Ho flew along with us within 12 yards of tho train and followed in exact sympathetic alignment not only with tho train, but also with our carriage window, for about 200 yards. At one time he spread his wings delightfully and floated along with us, then flapped and descended once more into the railway cover. An exquisite sight. No noise. 110 cngino trouble, no competitive spirit; just tine, sympathetic welcome such as I shall not easily forget. Auckland may be congratulated on the training of its "pheasantry." W. Seth Smith.
