CANTERBURY NOTES.

CRAND NATIONAL MEETING.

THE FAILURE OF OVERHAUL.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN COItnEKrONDENT.]

CHRISTCHURCH, Monday

The two-year-old colt by Weathervane from The Linnet was purchased last veek from the Dnnedin owner, Mr. .T. Richardson, by Mr. W. 11. Ward, and will be trained by It. C. Keeper at Ornri. The amount of taxes received 1 y the Government in .connection with the Grand National meeting was £12,120 Is sd, made up ns follows Stakes, A' 495; totalisator, £3905 Ills 3d; dividend, ,£7I3S los 8d; amusement, £'s2o 13s 2d. As a result of their successes at Ja3l week's meeting R. C. Symo bended tho list of jockeys' payments with £IIG Gs, and H. Dulieu was next with £lO5 16s. Zippor made a long trip from Hastings with the hope of winning a raco nt the Grand National meeting, but liis form was not impressive. He was going well at ono part of the Winter Cup, but met with, interference nnd failed to finish on. On Saturday he was slow to find his feet in the Sohvyn Handicnp, and was never sighted afterwards.

Tho Bailiff, who finished fourth in tho Woolslon Handicap oil Thursday, was heavily supported for the RedclifTs Handicap on Saturday, and made a bold bid for victory, but had to bo content with a similar placing. His form hist week suggests that his supporters will not have to wait long for a return.

Tho defection of Kawini from tho Lincoln Steeplechase on Saturday was duo to his receiving a slight injury when Maunga fell in front of him in the Grand National Steeplechase. Tho trouble was not of ft serious nature, but the gelding si ill showed signs of soreness on Saturday, and liin connections were reluctantly compelled to leave him in his box.

Dutch Monty had rot dono a great deal of tiolid work prior to last week's meeting, and her showing in the Longbench Handicap on Saturday pointed to her prospects for spring engagements. It would not be surprising to find her an important winner during the present season. With this speedy filly and Honeycomb, besides some promising two-year-olds in his stable, the veteran trainer W. G. Ilobbs can look forward to a successful time with his team. Overhaul was again a disappointment oil Saturday. It was generally recognised when be paraded in the Jumpers' Flat R;Uc on t!io opening day that his trainer had been too assy with liirn since the Wellington meeting. but an improvement in his form was expected with racing. This was not the case, however, and tho gelding's followers experienced a bad tinio financially. Aberfeldy let his supporters down badly in the Sydenham Hurdles on Saturday. His performance in tailing the field practically throughout was hard to understand, but it was evident that, as was tho case with other candidates in tho race, his trying effort :n the Grand National Hurdle Race had left effects.
