MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT.
THE UNIVERSITY LECTURES.
FIRST SESSION CONCLUDED.
The final lecture of the first session of the university course in municipal government. was given by Professor H. Belshaw at the Auckland University College last evening, and the activities of the session were reviewed later at a gathering of students in the Tower Tea Booms. Mr. F. N. Ambler presided, and Mr. M. R. O'Shea, registrar of the college, was also present. Mr. Ambler said that the establishment of the class had been due to the enthusiasm of Mr. O'Shea, the efforts of the Mayor, Mr. George Baildon, and the energy of all students. He was confident that the work would become one of the most important branches in the activities of the Auckland University College and an influence in civic life. Mr. Ambler referred to the forthcoming departure for Kioto of Professor Belshaw as one of the New Zealand delegates to the conference of the Institute of Pacific Relations, and on behalf of. the students presented him with a travelling rug. " I undertook the charge of this course with some trepidation," Professor Belshaw said, " firstly, because the subject matter did not deal entirely with economics, and secondly, because some of the students were practical men, whose knowledge of the subject was greater than my own." However, he himself had learned much from the discussion and written comments of students. There was no reason why the work should not expand in future. The class was largely experimental, but it had laid the foundation of something worth while. He thought it was quite likely that a discussion group would bo formed next year.
