Tho Department of Agriculture has received tho following cablegram dated August. .17, from (lie High Commissioner for New Zealand, London":— 'fallow.—There was a fair demand at auction, but the market is now quiet. lYesenf quotations fur spot are:—Mutton: Fine, 41s to 41s 6d per cwt.; fair to good, 38s to 40s; dark to dull, 36s to 375. Beef: Sweet and or mixed, 39s 6d to 435; fair (o good, 37s to 39s 6d ; dark to dull, 35s 6d to 36s 6d. Mixed: Fair to good, 37s to 395; dark to dull, 35s 6d to 36s 6d. Gut, etc., 34s to 36s 6d. Apples.—The market is flat with scarcely any demand this week. Less than half of the Port Nicholson consignment has been sold yet. Large quantities of English apples, and other English and Continental fruits are now arriving and are, selling cheaply. Current prices for New Zealand are:—Stunner, Pippin, 10s to 16s per case; Kokewood and Dougherty, 12s to 18s. Indications point to lower prices later. Eggs.—Tho market is quiet, but steady. Present quotations are:—English. 15s to 22s per long 100: Dutch, Danish and French. 12s to 17s 6d ; Belgian, 14s to 14s 6d: Polish, 9s 9d to lis 3d. Hemp.—Manila: Tho market is easier owing to adjustments. Statistics show a large increase in stocks. Closing values for J grade September-November shipments are about £3B 10s. Sisal: The market is quiet. Values are. No. -1 good marks. £4l 10s; No. 2, £4O to £4O ss. New Zealand: Inquiry continues for highpoints, but shippers are unablo to offer on account of lack of supplies. Buyers show no disposition to operato in 'lower,,grades at prices asked. Comparative closing values are: Highpoints, £35; fair, £32; common, £3O 10s; tow, second grade, £22; third grade, £l7 15s. Wool. —Tho Bradford mills are shut oil account of tho annual holidays and the trade is quiet. Present quotations for tops are:—64's warn, 3s 2d per lb.; average. 3s Id; 56's, 2s 4d; 50 s prepared, 2s Ojd; 40's prepared, Is 9d. DAIRY PRODUCE PRICES. LONDON MARKET QUOTATIONS. Amalgamated Dairies, Limited, received the following cablegram from its London office concerning the London dairy market, dated August 17: —Butter: Finest, 1745; unsalted, 1725: firm. Market active. General prices firm 170s to 1725; Danish, 1745, spot. now. 170s. f.0.b.: well cleared. Deliveries: New Zealand, 744 tons: stock. 8210 tons. .Retails unchanged. Cheese: Our quotations unchanged, white, 87s; coloured, 90s; market dull at advance. Canadian, 86s to 89s, spot; 88s, c.i.f., on further American purchases little buying London. Retail unchanged. The Bank of New Zealand received tho following advice from its London office as at tho close of business last week:—Butter: 171s to 1725; market quiet. Cheese: White, 87s to 88s; coloured, 90s to 91s; there is a better demand. FROZEN MEAT. LONDON MARKET VALUES. The Bank of Now Zealand received tho following advico from its London office yesterday concerning tho London frozen meat market as at the close of business last, week : Mutton.—Wethers, light, s|d to 6Jd per lb; heavy, 5d to 5Jd. Ewes, 4Jd to sd. There is a better inquiry for wethers. The reduction in the price of ewes lias improved the demand. Lambs.—Twos, BJd to 9d ; eights, 7Jd to B]d; fours, to 8d; seconds, 8d to BJd. Although the gates of the Kawnrau dam have been closed for ,about a week and the river lias fallen tc a low lovel tho claim-holders reinuin inactive. After tho initial efforts in 1926, when tho gates wore fust closed, tho claim-hclderr.- liavo dono practically nothing; 011 the Knsv'arau, in which is surik capital estimated at nearly £500,000. In tlio past three years tho miners at Cromwell arc tho only ones who have niado a serious attempt to work tho river, 110110 of th'o other parties having endeavoured to secure a return on their capital. Proposals for an amalgamation of tho claims have been made, but liavo reached a dead end, as several clauses in the proposed agreement arc not acceptable to tho Kawnrau Company. Tho Kawarau dam ilsolf, which was erected at a cost of £106,000, has proved a very efficient barrier as far as it has gono; but owing to other factors tho level of tho river has not been reduced to the expected level. At' present the position apepars to bo that cohesion is needed among the claim-holders and further that tho advice of an outside expert is claimed to bo essentials
